Science lab

In honor of dental awareness month, we worked on a science lab about teeth this week. We talked about healthy foods and keeping our teeth clean and strong. We talked about what happens if you have too much sugar or soda, and to illustrate this we soaked white hard boiled eggs in soda overnight. We predicted that the egg shells would peel Off, the eggs would turn brown, and holes would develop in the shells. When we came to school the next day, we were so excited to see what had happened- the white eggs had turned brown! Our mission was to get these teeth as clean as we could by brushing them with toothpaste!
We had to plan how we would do this with our partner- how should we hold it? Who would begin brushing? Would we take turns and switch roles?

After a lot of brushing, we finally got our eggs clean! We broke open the shells and took apart the inside, too! Some of us found soda stains inside of the egg shells. Many children had ideas of extending this lab at home- soaking eggs in milk, orange juice, or grape soda. One person wondered what would happen if she soaked a tooth she lost in soda overnight!
