Math centers

This week our math centers are geoboards, building a 3D structure, magic hat, and text messaging.
In magic hat, partners decompose numbers by using bears as counters. One partner hides some bears under a hat, and the partner has to figure out how many bears are hiding under the hat by icon ting the leftover bears. In text messaging, the captain thinks of a number and taps that many taps on someone's back. That person passes the taps onto the person in front of them. This is much harder than it seems!

Stone Zoo Animal Show

We also had an animal show from the Stone Zoo today. We learned about habitats and even got to touch a cockroach, a snake, and a ferret.

Space stations!

Today we pretended to be astronauts and we explored 4 space centers during science lab:
Moon walk, puzzle, nuts and bolts, and ice cream.
In the moon walk center, we helped our partner put sponges on his or her feet and pretend to walk on the moon. At the puzzle center, we attempted a tricky 100 piece rocket puzzle. In the nuts and bolts center, we pretended to fix the ISS with gloves on, like astronauts would. We even tried mint chocolate chip astronaut ice cream!

Architect's game

Happy Monday! We started a new game today called the architect's game. We learned about 3D and 2D objects, as well as shadows. I shined a flashlight on a 3D object, and the class had to draw the shape of the shadow that they saw. We learned that when you shine a light on 3D object, only the surface of the object is shown. We even did some more complicated structures with 3 or more shapes! This is an easy and fun thing to try at home!

Editor's eyes

We have started to edit our own writing using "editor's eyes'" which are pretend glasses that we wear (our fingers) to look at our own writing in a different way. We look for misplaced uppercase letters, punctuation, word patterns, and trick words. Here is our riddle for today, written by one of our own students: What kind of a pet is flat? A carpet!

Space!

We have just started learning about the moon and space. Here are some of our Venger drawings from math centers.

Thank you, Mr. Chen!

A special thank you to Mr. Chen who came to do a science lab with us on Wednesday. We learned all about ice, glaciers, and melting. We learned about the polar regions, which we I agile would be very similar to living in the Ice Age. We did an experiment to see which snow would melt first- snow in a ceramic cup, snow in a ceramic cup with salt, or snow in a wooden cup. Which do you think melted first? He also showed us a great video about ice and glaciers, as well as amazing photos from his family's life in Norway. We really felt like we lived in the Ice Age after that!
