Rainforest and snowglobes!

Here are some photos of displays outside our classroom. The snowglobes were done with our fifth grade book buddies- what would you do if you lived inside a snowglobe?

Centers week of Jan 28

Happy Monday! Her are some of our literacy centers for the week:

-Word building with word patterns
-Calling base camp
- guess that rainforest animal
- look and remember
- writing a book about myself
- acting out

Ask your child where he or she went today and what the activity was at that center. While children Are busily working at centers, I have begun taking groups of children to start leveled reading groups. Today, we finished working on our secret decoder game, a game in which children use a "secret decoder" to help find a word pattern and sound out the whole word.

Science lab

How can we melt an ice cube? Each pair of children had an ice cube in a cup. They guessed how much water would end up in the cup once the ice cube melted. Each child marked a line on the cup where the water might be once the ice was melted- we were surprised at the results! We tried blowing on the cube, shaking the cup, putting tissues over the cup, breaking the ice into smaller pieces, and squeezing it. Some ice cubes melted, and some did not!

Hidden picture

In Yahtzee, children roll a die within a die and combine the two numbers. The goal is to get each number on your list.

In Market Farm, children are practicing counting out an order of pretend food in teen numbers. One person is the manager at a cafe and the other is a farmer. The manager orders a certain number of items such as carrots for their cafe. The farmer has to fill this order and send the food over in a tractor.

Melting science lab

Which ice cube or snow ball will melt first- the one in your hand or in a gloved hand?
Here are our predictions and here is what we discovered...

The one in your hand melts first! Ask your child why this happens and what his or her prediction was. This was a great time to talk about how scientists make predictions that are incorrect sometimes, and this is how they learn- from mistakes!
